Improving Lives
with LAAE
Left atrial appendage exclusion (LAAE) may reduce morbidity and mortality for your Atrial Fibrillation (AF) patients
“AF-related strokes cause unacceptably high levels of death and disability, and the scale of the problem across
Europe is increasing as our population ages.12 ” Concomitant LAAE procedures may play a crucial role in helping to save lives and reduce this burden.2,4,14
Patient benefits: Outcomes15
The results of the LAAOS III, a randomised control trial, show that concomitant LAA exclusion (LAAE) improves outcomes compared with no-LAAE in AF patients.
Results showed a lower risk of ischemic stroke or systemic embolism in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with left atrial appendage exclusion performed during surgery than without it.
- 33% relative risk reduction at 3.8 years mean follow-up
- 42% relative risk reduction after first 30 perioperative days
No significant differences were observed in the incidence of perioperative bleeding, heart failure, or death between the trial groups.
Study overview
- Prospective, randomized study (blinded)
- 4,811 patients enrolled
- Multicenter – 105 centers, 27 countries
Kaplan-Meier analysis of cerebrovascular events and all-cause mortality in 222 patients undergoing LAAE
Prospective data collection (n=222)5 – concomitant LAAE was associated with low levels of mortality, with no cerebrovascular events in 99.1% of patients after a median follow-up of 20 months. The low rate of cerebrovascular events of 0.5 per 100 patient-years compares to a rate of 1.2 per 100 patient-years for a CHAD2DS2 VASc score of 2.
Patient benefits: Choice
Concomitant LAAE is an effective alternative for patients unable or unwilling to take oral anticoagulants2
